Orange County teen killed in Dana Point crash, 5 others injured

A student at Dana Hills School was killed, and five other teens were injured after a crash in the coastal Orange County community, officials said.

Good Morning Dolphin Families,

It is with profound sadness that I share there was an automobile accident involving six Dana Hills students yesterday. I am deeply saddened to report that one of our students died as a result of the crash and our other five were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries.

We are aware this tragedy will affect our entire school family and have multiple counseling agencies and therapy dogs on-campus providing support for any student or staff member in need. If your student would benefit from speaking with a counselor, please do not hesitate to reach out to our site directly.

Dana Hills High School is a strong community who will come together for each other and the affected Dolphin families. We thank you all for your support and compassion during this very difficult time.

What we know:

The crash happened on Tuesday, May 6, just around 11:45 a.m. near Island Way and Dana Point Harbor Drive.

Officials told FOX 11 the truck the teenagers were traveling in crashed into a tree.

Aerial images from SkyFOX showed the wreckage with the mangled truck and heavy damage on the driver's side. A tire could be seen lying on the median between lanes. 

Orange County Sheriff's officials said the driver, 16-year-old Rebecca Cespedes, was pronounced dead at the scene. Paramedics took the five other passengers to the hospital. Three were listed in critical condition and the two others were listed in stable condition. 

All the passengers in the car were students at Dana Hills High School. 

What we don't know:

The names of the crash victims have not been identified. 

The OCSD is investigating the crash, and it's unclear if drugs, alcohol, or speed were a factor.
